Although you might not like ants when they get in your food or get into your home, ants are interesting tiny insects and do help the environment. They are advanced social insects, because they live in highly organized large colonies where each group has complicated important relationships with many others. The queen ant has wings and its primary function is to lay eggs. The other female ants are called workers. They build the anthill, find food and even act as soldiers. The soldier ants protect the queen, defend the colony and attack enemy colonies in search of food. 

Ants don't have ears. Ants hear by feeling vibrations in the ground through their feet. They can carry things 20 times heavier than their own body weight. The muscle arrangement in an ant gives it great strength allowing it to carry heavy things toward the entry point of the anthill. Their colonies can contain millions of ants. When a queen ant dies, the entire colony usually dies within a few months. Although many people may suppose that ants aren't dangerous, scientists have compiled a list of them which can hurt. For instance, there is a kind of ant in Australia that has a bite and can kill a person.
